In March 2020 right after my birthday I decided to investigate the possibility of making electronic music on the iPad. As a long time Ableton user and ex Ableton trainer, I was inspired and impressed by the possibilities and the plethora of amazing and affordable apps for midi and sound generation.
Looking for a new approach I moved away from the traditional DAW and gravitated towards apps like AUM and AUDIOBUS which favoured midi connectivity between apps. The downside was that there was no easy way to sequence these connected apps. Meanwhile, the DAW's that sequence well didn't seem to have the same level of midi connectivity.
Additionally, coming from Ableton where there is an array of comprehensive midi controllers it was disappointing to find that midi control of apps was entirely possible but not well supported in the iPadOS music making environment beyond some basic midi learn which limit one knob/fader/button to one purpose.
